It was important to do this in context of the users and the activities the Garden Room currently sees.(Figure :1)

This information from Figure(s) 1 & 2 was used to compile a design brief.

Writtle College is one of the oldest and largest specialist institutions in the UK that offers a range of land-based, design and sport courses at various levels of academic study. It attracts students and visitors from across the globe. The picturesque 220 hectare campus enhances the experience. Hence it is imperative that a design for this campus be nothing short of world class.

The area around the Garden Room will be redesigned not only as a space to eat but also as a space of communal spirit. Care will be taken to ensure that this space is accessible for all and is easy to move through. The space will be inviting and appeal to all its users. Keeping in mind the range of users, discrete spaces will be proposed in the garden that will exhibit different qualities, moods and vibes. Also bearing in mind that the space may be used to host large scale events from time to time the design will ensure that these distinct spaces can come together as an organic whole when required. Along with the above mentioned the design will be sensitive to the rest of the client’s needs, wants and expectations.

The approach will be to marry functionality to world class aesthetics and sustainability to create a space that is impressive and makes a statement befitting of an institution acclaimed for its design and horticulture sensibilities.
